I have a pair of cycling gloves that I love. They have ridden all over the place with me - across my home state of Tennessee, from Vermont up to Montreal and back down through upstate New York, around and about Virginia - and more recently they've seen me through training and my only two triathlons. Can you see how well loved they are?

They are older than the bike I'm riding now...by more than a decade. In fact, these beloved gloves predate this beloved child:

The "child" is almost old enough to vote and it occurs to me that the gloves are (perhaps) close to retirement age. I tried a few rides without any gloves whatsoever. I mean, less is more in a racing situation, right? Well, mebbe so for talented peeps, but my limited bike handling skills went right out the window. Sweaty hands do not make for smooth gear shifting, steering, or braking in my world. New gloves are called for!
So recently (on a weekend trip to DC with
Donna), I broke down and bought these as a replacement:

They're pretty sweet. Fun Castelli scorpion logo, perfect size for my hands, nice and thin flexible padding, and even nifty between-the-finger loops to help pull them off quickly in transition. (I will refrain from whining that after only a few rides, one seam has already unraveled a tiny bit. I will also resist bemoaning what a pain it is to keep from losing one or the other without the benefit of velcro straps across the backs that can be threaded together.) My mini saga here has got me wondering if anyone else spends this much time thinking about their cycling gloves. Chime in! What criteria do you all use in replacing gloves? Are you brand loyal? Have more than one pair at a time? And how often do normal cyclists replace their gloves anyway? Do any of you manage to live without them completely?
Happy Monday all!
TODAY I LOVE: Skype (which I know is not new but I just learned how to use it - so much fun!)

i also recently had to replace mine... my first pair had a big gel pad on the meaty part of my lower thumb, but it was one big pad. I eventually pushed up and stayed there, so next time I looked for one that had multiple seams going through that same pad, and it's a lot more comfortable.
Hope you eventually fall in love though! :)
bery.nice!! Good gloves are a must, but not so much during a race...
I think my one and only pair of bike gloves are too small. Your hands aren't supposed to go numb are they :).
Skpye sounds awesome but I haven't a clue how to use it either!
skype is awesome. it's how i communicate (or turn off to avoid) the office. and new bike gloves are cheap and still rock. it's a good thing.
haven't replaced gloves yet - no clue how i'll know when it's time!
You skirts and your accessories!
I got nothin' for you, sister. I only ride my recumbent exercise bike which has no gears, so I don't need gloves.
You're still blogging?
I had given you up for dead.
Like Teh Marcy.
Way to not be like Teh Marcy, sister.
Ive given up on gloves for the most part, but the ones I have used are Izumi's
Welcome to the world of Skype (couldn't live w/o it) and new cycling gloves (could live w/o only in a sprint or short ride).
I have 4(!) pairs of gloves, 3 in Orlando and 1 pr in Hawaii. Of the ones in Orlando, one I don't like because there's not enough cushioning. The other two are the same as the pair in Hawaii, which I love. They were only like $10 from Performance and having more than one means I'll always have a clean pair ready to ride :-)
You were in my hood?
