Thank you all for your good wishes and virtually crossed fingers. (Crossed virtual fingers? Totally not sure which way that goes.) Whichever - I'm sure they're all cramped and achy by now! I wish I had good news to report on the job situation. The best news I have is you don't have to shoot us yet. The company did call on Tuesday, but not with a job offer yet. Seems they want more references. They've already checked the three provided but now they want three more of a specific type. (John sent back four. Overkill? Maybe. But at this point, overkill may be the best response!) The recruiter says this request is not a bad sign or a signal of any concerns on their part. All the feedback is very positive and this is merely "due diligence". Did I tell you that John had to take a personality test (or management style quiz or whatever you want to call it)? There is no "right" or "wrong" on it, but they don't give you your results unless you're hired. This is in addition to the four interviews (one of which spanned three entire days). And now they've got SEVEN references spanning 15 (of his 25) years of IT experience in start ups, big corporate environments, small business, and university/institutional situations - the whole freaking enchilada. I do NOT need to be given access to the personality assessments on these people to know that the bottom line is "anal retentive, OCD freaks". I mean that in a good way though. Clearly they are careful, thorough, attention-to-detail oriented folks. The half-glass-full side of me would like to point out that if they are willing to invest this much energy into a potential employee, then surely they are playing to get the right people in and keep them there. Even though I'm frustrated with the pace, nothing has been done with anything other than a straight forward, transparent approach. This company reeks of integrity. They are a thriving, growing tech company which in this economy speaks volumes about the intentionality of their management. I do, however, reserve the right to withold further praise until they hurry the f*ck up and offer John the job.In training news: (silence).
(And speaking of crickets chirping, remind me to tell you an amusing little anecdote starring John's iPhone in case I forget in the nanosecond it takes me to type about my training.)
Yesterday
Ok now that we got THAT out of the way, the story. Well it's not so much a story as it is maybe a friendly "hey, you might oughta think this through a little bit more" kind of thing. You want to know how to freak out all of your fellow diners at your favorite Indian restaurant? Humor your lovely partner by getting rid of that annoying-as-fuck ringtone that sounds like someone strangling a ghost and replace it with the soothing sound of crickets chirping on a summer's eve. Then accidentally have the ring volume set really loud and not be able to get to your phone quickly when it rings in the middle of dinner. (Then spend ten minutes reassuring all those people looking under their chairs and the panicked wait staff that no, really, you're very sorry, it's just the phone, you promise, there are no actual bugs. Really. So sorry.) Fun times were had by all. Thanks again for the good mojo. I'll post as soon as I know anything else. In the mean time, have a great weekend everybody.
TODAY I LOVE: Natalie Goldberg's Wild Mind and that my boys will be here tonight!!!!!!
*Where rest=sleepless, hormonal, stalking, stomping, bat-shit crazy, stress.
**Where run may = ride on the bike trainer because the temp is dropping 10 degrees/hour and it's supposed to rain or maybe sleet.
***Where swim = almost definitely yoga and weights because no way am I going to get in the water when I'm bleeding to death. TMI? Maybe, but if so, then for the love of gummy bears, do not even think about reading Steve In a Speedo?!, Glaven, Carolina John, or Project Procrastination. 'Cause seriously? These folks invented over disclosure. Bless their hearts.

Awesome! I now have to figure out where I can download a cricket ring tone....
I will continue to cross my digits and think good job thoughts for John.
I know that dang offer is coming in soon. comeon, comeon, comeon, comeon, comeon........
I'm guilty of overdisclosure? you mean you didn't like my team name for the Bruised Taints? I just like to make fun of Glaven. any Glaven insult with overdisclosure of his crap makes for a good day.
Today, Glaven is struggling with his own sexuality and weight issues apparently. He's planning on being more gay in the future (if that's possible) and thinks he can lose weight by admitting his actual penis size. Now THAT's overdisclosure.
btw, i really like that word, overdisclosure.
And TMI? I am amazed how many of the female based blogs I read that have their cycles synced up. Is that even possible over the internet? i don't know.
Not only is that company giving you all heartburn its killing the rest of us out here too. I'll keep praying!
I need to start using footnotes in my posts. Love it.
I love reading your stories. You make me giggle all the way here in MO!
Have a good day! Enjoy your boys!!!
Hope you have a wonderful time with your boys.
It can only be good if they are taking that long to decide! Right!
Take care!!
Hope you guys get good news soon about the job. Crazy hiring process.
Wow, Sister, who knew Starbucks was so anal retentive about their hires!
HAR!1! I crack me up!
I'm still keeping the good thought for John and the rest of you.
I like it when my "boys" are home, too. Of course, I'm pretty sure I mean something different from what YOU mean when I refer to "my boys".
Is that TMI?
(Incidentally, I was referring to my testicles. In case that wasn't clear. TMI yet?)
My fingers are still crossed! I hope you hear soon, so you can tell us! This is crazy-making!
funny! i have the rim shot/crickets chirping iphone app but i'm not sure anyone else is as amused by it as i am.
good luck to John!
I choose to believe that no news (yet) is good news for John. Sounds like a great company, very savvy, very excellent and John will fit in well there!
I love the cricket photo with the earplugs! Although I'm not sure how applicable it is in this case since you described your training for the rest of the week.
I've had too many stress induced rest days really more than I would like to admit and they did not affect me badly in the long run -- I was still able to achieve my goals. I do have than I used to.
:-)
Oh wow... crickets in a restaurant.. amazing.
Darling baby giraffe!
And a winner of an interview tie.. a million good luck wishes.
OOooooohhh man dang!! Here's a lesson in patience for ya, eh? I'm still crossing my fingers for you guys! I hope we hear some good news soon! D ;D
Still crossing fingers
It is mind boggling how long this interview process is taking
The ring tone story is funny.
and my blog today mentioned not swimming for reason's I'd rather not get into...yeah...let's just say I get why you aren't swimming and leave it at that. blech!
Be patient. A company checking out references is a good thing. It usually means they are preparing to make an offer, and want to be doubly sure before they make the commitment.
That is quite the interview process...the job better be worth the ulcer!
I was following along and then I saw the word 'gummy bears' at the end. That triggered an urge for gummy bears. Now I don't even know what I was going to comment on...
It's OK, you can get into the water...there are no sharks there. Even though we call it shark week at our house!
You really don't have to stir up Gaven;)
So funny about that ring tone!!
Glad to hear John is still in the running for that job. I'm somewhat amazed at how many hoops he has to jump through but sounds like this company is worth it. Just wish they'd hurry up and offer him the job.
