Wondering

Is it totally crazy to think we could do a half iron a year from now? (Reminder - we have one sprint and one olympic distance under our belts.) Our watchword for the 2009 race season is going to be "local"! No more races on the other side of the country for a while. However - there are some fantastic races like White Lake, the RamblinRose, and... the B2B which I thought until last night was only a full iron distance but turns out to have a half. Oooooh!

NOT crazy!

Here's my $.05:

1) You have to WANT IT. Bad.

2) Get a GOOD TRAINING PLAN. If a coach is not in the cards (and I don't think you need one to successfully do an HIM), talk to others who have successfully self coached such as Kevin, Wes, and Cindy, and spend as much time as you need to finding a plan that will work for you.

3) Work that plan and train consistently! In the absence of illness or injury, if you feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable, TRAIN ANYWAY, train through it! A good plan will be designed to push you out of your comfort zone.

4) When the plan calls for rest, then REST. When it pushes you then PUSH. You should have confidence in your plan and not be second guessing it.

5) Schedule some other races (sprint/olympic) leading up to the HIM to practice racing and build confidence.

Woo Hoo this is exciting!

With hard work, determination, and a little bit of luck... you can do anything you set your mind to!!!

Kiwi lurker delurking here! I hope it's possible for you to do a half-Iron a year from now because that's exactly the goal I've set for myself! I've run a few half marathons, completed a few cycle races (the longest 100km but I have a 160km race in a month), and completed a couple of short-distance duathlons, but I can't swim a single length! So guess what I'm going to be focussed on for the next few months! :)

Looking forward to reading more as you 'work that plan'!

I agree that Stef is motivating!! Stef, you have got to end up coaching. And I have such good role models leading the way to this half iron path. I've gotten more and more excited about this goal the more I've thought about it. I have to crunch some numbers (eek) but I think we are going to try to make it happen!

I have no half iron plans myself, not even sure if another half marathon is in the cards for me with my knee situation, BUT...I think you should be able to work up to it in a years time. So if that's what you WANT, go for it. :-)

Why not go watch B2B on Saturday? You'll need to park in downtown Wilmington--just over two hours' drive--and take a free water taxi across the river to see the finish. You'll see your answer in the faces of people finishing.

I think it's fully completable. Just have a plan - and roughly follow it. If you establish a good solid winter base (running/cycling mostly) - you'll sail through your first half. :)

Sure, it's doable! My second tri was a half iron (didn't do an oly before). As has already been said, find a good training plan or a coach. And there's a chance I might do B2B next year :-)

Ohhh!! How exciting:-)I now you guys can do it and you have plenty of time to train. There are so many people thinking about doing the B2B next year I may have to convince Izaac he wants to do it so I can come watch.

Of course it is possible! Anything is possible. My philosophy is, if not now when? Two years from now? Three? Who knows what life is going to throw at you. Don't put off living your life. Ever. For anything.

Go for it!

So glad you are back in the blogosphere. My schedule sucks and I may not comment every time but know that I am reading, and cheering, and laughing and just glad to hear about your life! I missed my friend.

Stef said it best. If you have a plan you can do it.

You dont need profesional support (although you made need professional help!)

We believe in you. Do you?
