Hole In The Wall

Hole in the training plan. And hole in the blog.

I've deleted the last two posts but I've saved all of the comments in my heart because y'all are not only the best, but also the funniest and most perfectly twisted friends a gal could have.

We're home. It's weird.

I'm looking forward to training. I have no idea what I'm actually going to be able to do in the next week and a half. I'm supposed to be tapering. Then again, I was supposed to be peaking in volume over the last two weeks and we know that didn't happen. (I'm new at this but I'm pretty sure peak volume is not supposed to be close to the number zero. Just saying.)

So. Taper. Obviously I'm not going to build any big endurance back. Donna says she read an article about short, intense workouts to keep your body on track but not overloaded. (Heck, maybe that's what the word "taper" means. I've always wondered about the difference between tapering and resting.) I'll try to find that article and link to it tomorrow. I'm also open to suggestions on how to salvage my chances for finishing my first oly.

Hope everyone had a safe and satisfying Labor Day weekend. First regular season NFL game this week!! (I love football as much as it's possible to love a sport you yourself could never actually play.) Peace to my peeps!

Dear, two comments in light of the posts that are gone. Give yourself some slack. Tri is not going to be exactly as you envisioned it, because stress does affect you. However, in someone's post-half-mar words - I is a runner - You is a triathlete. This one will set a benchmark. You'll have the next one(s) to shine. Be kind to yourself.

Kidswise -They don't always stay kids. We want them by our side not just as kids but also as adults. They will figure out the picture. Seems like they already do. And you'll have them there by your side when they are old enough to make their independent choices. Patience and good faith.

Lots of love, and happy tapering :).

As a coach, I can confidently say you really have done all of the work needed to make it through the race well. Even folks who follow the build to the letter get worried during the taper. You have enough stress already; don't waste energy on race apprehension. Focus now on including some efforts at your projected race pace in most workouts.

E.g.: swim with 3-4 x 300 at race effort as part of an otherwise easy set (open water is best); bike with 4-6 x 4:00 at race effort; run with 3-4 x 3:00 at race effort. Choose the upper end of the range this week, the lower next week, or follow Gale's plan to the letter starting this weekend. Speaking of which, a shortish brick (1 hour bike, 20-30 min. run) will boost your confidence. Include those short, race-pace intervals with plenty of recovery in between.

And mental training, lots of positive visualization of everything going your way on race day, including how to deal with kelp, rubbing brakes, a blister. Think up creative solutions and remember how good it feels to finish strong.

You HAVE done the work, you HAVE got it in there, and you WILL be great.

Love,
Sage

I haven't any taper advice, but it sounds like the comments above are great suggestions. The article Donna read sounds smart, too. You've put in many awesome hours of training - just remember that during your triathlon and enjoy :D

Oh, YES - I am very excited about the NFL season finally being here!!!

Dear Calyx,

I'm just catching up on my blog reading and am bummed that I missed two posts. I gather from Wes' comment, though, that things did not go well at the trial. I'm very sorry. But perhaps this tri is exactly what you need to keep yourself moving forward in another aspect of your life. No matter what life throws you, the person who is able to find ways to keep moving forward is the person who gets ahead. You ARE this person.

As far as I can tell, training plans rarely go as expected anyway. For example, my taper is turning into an extended rest break to try to get past knee pain. I figure if you focus on having run at the race, it's all good. :)

I have faith in you and I'm sure you will come out strong (in both the oly and the other situation).

I love football, and being from New England I have to say "Go Patriots!" :)

(((HUGS))) I think it's better to be under trained then over trained!! Just go in to enjoy it!

Rest, rest, rest. I have come to the conclusion that taper=rest. Don't stress about the last week or two. You've done the hard work now it's time to reap some reward.

I don't know what to say about the kids. You will find your peace. Somewhere, somehow, you will find it. You are a wonderful, wonderful person. You'll get through it.

Wow you got some great comments and advice for the taper. Go for it girl! Taperwise that is. Breathe easy. You have it in you to finish -- you know you do. :-)

Remember why you signed up for the race to begin with and revel in how strong you have become.

Youve done the hard training. You will be fine to get out there and race. Be Strong. You can do it!!

Good idea with the deleting. Glad you shared though cause that is too big not to know...

You got amazing advice. I wish I could understand some of it ;)

You are going to do great during your race because just by getting there and doing it you have already accomplished greatness!!

Just have fun:-)

I love tapering, the hard part is getting back into training after the race!

Uh oh I'm afraid I've been away for a bit and missed the last few posts, but from what I can gather here, if you can remember at the end of the day that the ONLY thing you HAVE to do out there in order to be a success is to have fun and be grateful for the experience, hopefully that will take some pressure off...

Of life what I've learned is that we spend way too much time being hard on ourselves, and way too much time living everywhere except in today - yesterday, tomorrow, next year... I don't know if any of that helps at all, but we have so much in common I'm hoping it might land in the neighborhood. Live for today :)

You are going to do great because you are ready for it. Just stay in the moment and enjoy what the challenge has to offer you.

Hang in there.
