I did know you were supposed to clean your bike. I just wasn't sure (even after reading
this post) exactly how to go about it. So I did what I always do when confounded by obstacles of the mechanical or technical kind - I kinda sorta forgot about it. That worked reasonably well for a while. (By "reasonably well" I mean "having trouble shifting but it's only
really bad in the middle ring" and by "a while" I mean "a long while" - erk, true confession time, the words "two years" apply here. I
know! What a bad bike mom I am.)
I don't know what the deciding factor was. Maybe it was the baked on bug guts from the 7,100 mile ride on top of the car? (I only have a picture of the car, but my bike (Vivian) was every bit as bad.)

Maybe I got inspired seeing
this post? (Shiny!) Or maybe it was just a way to distract myself from the sturm und drang that is this week. Whatever the final catalyst - Vivian got a "bath" on Sunday!

I got the supplies listed
here and then had to get an interpreter to explain the instructions to me, but eventually I got to work. I am still not sure what the teflon spray is for or why you need that and chain lube. Hope I didn't screw something up!

Degreaser is amazing stuff. I bought one bottle thinking that would be plenty - ha! I should have ordered a VAT! Who knew my chain and gears weren't supposed to be black and crusty? (Oh, everyone but me knew that? Damn.)

<--Believe it or not, this is a picture AFTER I'd been working on this part (do NOT ask me what it's called) for a while. Other highlights? I picked a wasp carcass out of one pedal and the mummified remains of a peanut m&m out of the other. Yummy!

Not as shiny as Steve's but not bad for a first timer, eh? Now my question to you good folks is this - do you do this EVERY WEEK?! It says every week! Hoolies! That is a lot of work - even factoring in a cleaner bike to start with and a somewhat more knowledgeable bike mama. Clearly two years was too long between washings and yet, weekly bike slave I cannot be. What's the middle ground peeps?
I doubt I'll be posting again until the other mess is over. Thank you for the comments, offers of support, and protective wishes. Y'all are the best. Hope everyone kicks butt in training (or, for those newly iron, in recovering) this week! Peace!

LOL.... I didn't clean my bike for the first year. I just oiled the chain for the first time since it was tuned up. I am SO bad :-) I got to clean it up from my ride Sunday. Thanks for the list! I needed it!!
I'm with ya...I cleaned my bike for the first time ever the day before Socorro sprint tri!! OMG - it was awful. At least you were smart enough to do it in the garage. I cleaned mine in the house with tons of old towels and t-shirts under it. I'll have to send you a picture I took of my grimey hands and even my feet from all the splatter :D
It looked so nice after, Jeff asked me to clean his chain.
Great job on the bike maintenance!!
I usually clean mine at least once a month. I have been using simple green, and found out they recently came out with a degreaser. Its less then 5$ for a big bottle.
Stay Strong
Luckily, bike maintenance is something my husband enjoys doing so I've never had to do it (I'm in charge of many other things, though, so it evens out). Your bike looks mighty clean!!!
thanks for the comment! i hope to one day have enough grime on my bike to clean. it looks good!
Nice cleaning!! And it looked like you used too much degreaser. Gross.
You clever girl!!! Might need to look up all that stuff for tips myself.
Hope the week goes well. Thinking of you...
Don't forget that you need to replace your chain now and then too. I just found that out the hard way. SIGH!!!!!! I need to clean mine too...once a week!? No way. ;>)
I have a friend who is part of a cycle club. She says the serious cyclists clean their bikes every week or two. Seems that most of us un-serious types clean it once or twice a year. Ha!
I haven't cleaned my bike since I got it, in early 2007! Great list though I bookmarked it. :-)
Stay Strong!
Great minds think alike...I was just wondering what I needed to do for basic bike care....I will check out the link! Thanks!
Hope all goes well.
Oh my...wow...that's a very solidly messy work area.
Nicely done! :)
If you want some more practice... I could arrange for some more bikes if you're in the DC area...
Oooh good job. Doesn't look like much fun though ;)
Will be thinking of you with all the crap going on. Stay strong!!!
My Gosh! Reason #478239472839 why I could never get a bike. I didn't even know you had to clean them HAHAHAHAAA
