We had such a lovely Valentine's Day! John made supper last night - baked mahi with potatoes, seared scallops with sauteed spinach, and Donna made French Silk pie for dessert. (What did I contribute you ask? I was designated kitchen wench - in charge of pouring wine and looking cute. Vital job, I assure you.) We gave each other small, fun presents. A family tradition is to give the kids crazy underwear for Valentine's Day. This year I scored big when I found Mountain Dew and Play Station 3 boxers. I couldn't find something fun like that for our youngest, but I found a coolie, cool shirt. His response when I asked him if it fit? "I haven't tried it on yet. I've been savoring it. It's so awesome Mom!" Does it get more rewarding than that? (I don't think so, but you're welcome to disagree with me.)
Another totally fun thing we did was watch hours and hours of the Winter Olympics. I loved the inclusivity of the opening ceremony. Despite the hitch with the flame tower at the end - the pace, the imagery, and the incredible lighting effects reflected the scale and beauty of Canada. And OMG I love, love, love watching speed skating. Apolo Ohno is amazing* and JR Celski's story is unbelievably triumphant. A gash six inches long and three inches deep (ack!) that came within a fraction of an inch of his femoral artery six months ago. He went from thinking he'd not skate again - to being on the ice in two months. TWO. Eight weeks and he was back training. Remind me not to whine ever again, ok? And how fun and spunky are the American mogul** (freestyle?) skiiers Shanon Bahrke and Hannah Kearney?! The only reason I'm not moaning*** about missing football already is because I am SUCKED INTO the Winter Games****.
I hope everyone is having a sweet weekend with those they love. I plan to have some actual training to report next post. I go to Phoenix this weekend for a training conference. Phoenix, Arizona - you know, where it's warm. I am totally going to sneak in a run. Peace!
TODAY I LOVE: sexy, speed skater thighs!
*And by amazing, I mean, HOT as well as wicked fast. Just saying.
**Doesn't it make your knees ache in sympathy to watch mogul skiing?
***Not the same as whining, btw.
****Which is weird. I can't explain it but it happens every four years. I don't like cold or snow or anything to do with winter - EXCEPT Christmas and the Winter Olympics.

can you make a side trip to LA??????
I'm glad you had a nice Valentine's Day-I on the other hand hate this stupid holiday!! But the crazy undies thing sounds fun!!
I totally have sympathy pains watching them ski - their knees, their backs. Holy crap! I'm with ya, Olympics is saving me from Football depression.
what a cute tradition for the kids with the crazy underwear for Valentines day!
yea i've been drooling over the olympics too. so much fun to watch! can't say i did anything for vday though.
I've been loving watching it on TV as well...though clearly not for the same reasons as you. ;)
Apolo's body is AMAZING! Seriously. But the Olympics are going to be the death of me - why do I have to stay up so late? ACK!
I've actually enjoyed the Moguls, Speed Skating, and cross country ski-ing. I'm not feeling very southern these days :-) yea. what the Olympics need is football! That's the ticket!!!
Love to watch the skill of the participants. Don't care much about the winning/losing. Actually, I hate pyramids.
A finisher's medal for EVERYONE!
Lilies for Valentine's Day sound lovely.
Speed skating looks so smooth. So elegant like they are barely even trying. It always feeds my illusion that I could do that. How hard can it be right???
Now mogul on the other hand? No way! I'd break before I got off the bunny hill. Do they have a bunny hill for mogul newbies?
The french silk pie sounds fabulous, so does the whole dinner. Love the Olympics. Speedskaters have amazing legs as well as the hockey guys...nice butts too.
Sounds like a great V-day! The undies thing is cute.
I know I must be like the only one NOT watching the Olympics but I did hear a little coverage in the background for the first time while my husband was on the trainer. Does that count?
Not the holiday you want to abreviate.
