I have a hard time letting go of things. I am working on it, but it is a big challenge on so many levels. Recent examples:- It shreds me to let my boys walk away from me and get on the plane. Inside I'm weeping and grasping. On the outside I'm playing all cool and giving them age appropriate hugs (bigger for the ten year old and only tight enough for the teenagers to be able to pretend to be embarassed, but not tight/big/long enough for them really to want to pull away first). I'm working on waving casually. I don't know how stealthy I am about it but I cannot keep myself from breathing in deeply in that last minute as if to pull some part of them back to hold onto even as they walk away from me.
- I have some clothes that need to go. Clothes that I don't wear and a few things that I have had for over 15 years. Mind you - I don't have a lot of clothes total. Shopping is not remotely my thing. It's not like my closet is bursting at the seams. But it has been bugging me recently to see these few things that are lingering. I don't know why I am holding on to them. I'm blaming this one on inertia.
- Football season is over - really over. Waaaannnnnhhhhh. I am jonesing for pigskin and I have months and months to wait. (While it is no substitute for the actual game, there is some off-the-gridiron drama percolating. With this past week's franchise tags going out and free agency starting next week and the draft in April, I can at least read about football. And talk about it. A teeny little bit. Like this rant - I am TRYING to like* Dallas but they are making it well nigh impossible. They let Pacman Jones go (which is key) but now there's rumbling that they might bid for Ray Ray? Bleck!!!!!! He's the player I despise most who doesn't already play for the Cowboys.)
- Water weight. I ate sushi yesterday for the first time in ages and ages**. And promptly gained two pounds. That is a pound per sushi roll! I promise you they do not weigh that much in and of themselves. I'm giving that bottle of "reduced sodium" soy sauce the evil eye but that's not getting rid of the poundage. Maybe the three gallons of water and peppermint tea I'm drinking today will flush the "reduced sodium" out of my system along with those opportunistic extra pounds!
In training news, I have some track workout questions for you. Next weekend I have a track workout that calls for doing ten of the following twelve drills (my choice) each for 100m:
1.Walk on Toes
2.Walk on Toes (Heels in, Heels Out)
3.Walk on Heels
4.Walk on Heels (Toes in, Toes Out)
5. Strides
6. Butt Kicks
7. High Knee running
8. Karaoke***
9. Skipping
10.High Knee Skips
11. Butt Kicks
12. Run Backwards – pushing off from your fore foot
The astute observer will note that the rat bastards who designed this plan said there were tweleve drills to choose from but then listed "butt kicks" twice thereby reducing the available choices to eleven. Which, in my way of thinking, means I only get to cross one off the list. I'm tempted to cross "butt kicks" off the list just on principle. Clearly I'm keeping the walking ones and the skipping one on the list because I know for a fact I can actually do those. (You see how hardcore I am about pushing my limits, right?) Cindy just mentioned a guy running backwards at the track and I was all "dude - I haven't even mastered the running forwards part" when ACK "running backwards" appears on the list. So I wanted to knock that one off the list, lest I do a skull plant and kill myself at the track. Then I saw the warning for the "Strides" drill that says, "Do not attempt this exercise if you’re not conditioned for high intensity activities." EEK. Now I want to strike that one off the list. But then Karaoke*** looks like a death trap of the tangled feet variety. I haven't even been brave enough to look up "High Knee Skips" but chances are that one is dangerous too! What is a klutzy girl to do?!! Do y'all do these? What exactly are these drills designed to help? Does it work?
Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! Peace out.
*And by "like" what I mean is "not loathe and detest". (Gotta walk before you can run.) I wouldn't even do that much because it's a serious effort, but my no-longer-blogging-or-I'd-link-to-her pal Cindy is a Dallas fan who started rooting for the Titans because of me. How can I not reciprocate?
**Where "ages" is entirely subjective and feels like months and possibly years, but may in fact appear to outsiders to be about 10 days.
***This looks like the grapevine dance step to me and maybe most of you knew what "karaoke" was vis a vis running. I was mildly disappointed (though not surprised) to see that it did not involve alcohol, cheesy music and laughing my ass off with friends at people who can't sing. On the other hand - the boy in this video is niiiiicccce to look at (IMHO) and that helped somewhat. Though (natch) it leads me to questions about how to apply this drill. He says to work one leg, you go one direction. Does that mean I would do 50 m one way and 50 m back? Or two separate 100 m stints, one on each side? And if I did the latter, then could I get away with counting it as two of my ten, thereby crossing a whole other drill of the list for the day? What think you?

If you ever stop being shredded by your kids departure, we'll start worrying about you :-)
Sorry I am no help with the drills. Who does running drills? Not I :-)
Coach makes us do drills sometimes, but just a few, maybe three at a time.
I vote for skip, butt kicks, and some variation of walk on toes.
And why can't you do multiples of the same one if you want to? I think you just need to get to 10 reps.
Oh my...I will lose respect for the Cowboys if they take on Ray Lewis! He's my least favorite player in the NFL!!! Girl, I will always like you even if you INTENSLY DISLIKE the Cowboys ;-)
I gotta say, I so love the picture with the little heart balloon.
Running backwards! I would trip and fall on my butt, no doubt!
I think you're the one that I "stole" the Abs for Life book from Gazelle's giveaway. Give me like 2 or 3 weeks and I'll copy the pages I want to keep and it'll be all yours.
I have my sights set on an olympic distance try in September. I'm really looking forward to reading all the plans out there and following others blogs in preparation.
My mom still gets all emotional when she leaves after a visit with me and I am 30! I think there would be something wrong if you didn't.
The comment about not mastering running forward made me smile.
I know how you feel watching your boys walk to the plane....never looking back (or maybe just once) and rolling their eyes when you cry or hug!! It happens to me all the time! I know what you are going thru and understand! It does get a little better as they get older, but it always hurts-sorry! You can vent anytime to me!! Because I am there with you!!!! Just remember they LOVE YOU!!!! No matter what! They LOVE YOU!
I can't imagine how hard it must be to let your kids go. Anyone can read how much this whole ordeal has hurt you through the past months. It really makes me lose faith in our court system. Hang in there though, your kids still love you and everything will work out.
I feel your pain about football though. I miss my Saturday college football so much. I have no sport to watch for many many months now.
Horrible, horrible training program you've got there. Good luck with that. I'll be sure to read about it (and giggle).
Can't help you with football but i don't know how you get thru your kids' leaving. I HATE saying goodbye...to people I hardly even know! It doesn't get easier, sorry. :(
Unrelatedly: you will feel better once you toss those clothes out.
As to your horrifically evil coach...yikes, yikes and yikes! I'm sure that stuff is brilliant and helpful but I would end up in the hospital if I tried any of those tricks. (I was all up for the karaoke though--until I saw what it really meant!)
Drills have shown up on my schedule several times already, most of them the ones you listed.
I do the ones I like and then let go for the others and just do the reps and I don't worry how I think I will look to others. I think they do help too. They have made me stronger. :-)
Oh and you can do them slowly. ;-)
OMG I would DIE if I tried to do that karaoke drill. I'm waaayyy too clumsy for that. I've never done any drills :-X I think they're supposed to help you with your form?! I don't know HAHA
Have I told you lately that you are amazing?! Seriously, my new friend, you have to be one of the strongest people (physically and mentally) that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. In real life and online! :) I have no idea how you have done so well and still kept on going after losing your kids. Wow.
In other news- where on earth did you find those drills?
you don't need a good reason to hate on the cowboys. none of us do. their mere existence is enough to generate hatred. and prick jerry jones makes it easy.
Truthfully, I have done all those drills and the proof is here: they don't work. LOL! I really think unless you are going to do track workouts all the time, or are a fast runner, these things are a waste of time. But that's just my opinion of course. Try them before you buy them.
I had a love/hate relatiosnship with the drills. They were hard and made me feel like an idiont, on idiot that was out of shape! My HR was very high with drills. On the otherhand, since they were hard, I felt like I got a good workout in with less time than I usually spend.
The walking on heels/toes KILLED me. Very hard stuff for just walking!
With the exception of #1-4, I've done the other drills as part of sports conditioning classes to help with agility, power and light footedness. Be careful when starting out doing them and make sure you have well cushioned shoes. To be honest, I think most runners probably just do strides to start out.
Oh, and I definitely still have clothes that I should get rid of but still hold on to. They are totally out of style but still fit!
Running drills suck. But I find them somewhat enjoyable because they are mixed into the middle of the track workout - thus effectivly I call them "a happy-breakland" from running hard.
The heel ones though are sorta intersting on your list, as typically you try and minimize heel contact. What is the goal of those specific items?
I hear ya about the football!!
I don't know about the kids yet, but I see you figuring out the same things that my mom did too about age appropriate hugs, etc...
Karaoke is easier than it looks - I can do it fairly easily. Just remember to *pop* the knee over for the best workout.
High Knee Skips are where on each skip you drive your knee upward and try to jump as high in the air as possible. Use your arms to pump upwards too. Vertical, not horizontal = lots of high skips.
Butt kicks and high knees are easy. Do them like pepper...fast little steps.
These are REALLY good for your running form. Makes your body more efficient. I guess track in grades 6-9 did me some good after all.
Letting go of water weight seems like a scrumptious example of letting go.. I'm for that one.
Congratulations on your super-core training.
