We rode almost the race distance in less than our goal time over a course with rolling hills and wind. We upped the pace, went longer, in moderately challenging circumstances - and I felt great! I was tired by the end but it was a good morning on the bike. I found out afterwards that our peak speed was 32 mph which tops my previous record of 27 mph. I feel more confident on Vivian than ever before. We also stopped and helped a fellow cyclist who'd blown a tube on his first ride on his new bike. His name was Charlie. We shook hands and I asked him if people drove him crazy saying, "Wake Up Charlie. We're going to Candy Mountain Charlie." He laughed and said, "It's a land of joy and light...and joyness."
After waving goodbye to our new pal Charlie, Donna and I spent the rest of the ride saying things like "Shunnnnnnnnnnn" and "It's a magical leopluridon" to each other and cracking up. Ahhh, it takes so little to amuse us.
The Bad (Blowout > Wipeout?):
The Ugly (Sunscreen Works Better When Applied!):
Speaking of the run... I so very much wanted to be able to put the run in the "Good" category today but I can't. The sun was zapping me, the transition was rough, I had to take walk breaks, and the negative voices surfaced to say all kinds of horrible things. I was struggling on all levels - physical, mental, emotional to get through it. Now, I do give myself credit for fighting against and purging some of the critical voices, for moving forward when I wanted to stop, and for choosing the world's best partner. Donna talked me through the roughest part, was encouraging and empathetic, and somehow knew exactly when to run on and let me keep slogging. Where I gained new confidence on the bike, I lost confidence on my run. The run seems to be getting harder. I don't know if that's because I'm making progress in the other two sports or what. I'm trying to "Re-rax" as John tells me in his best Scooby-Doo voice. Intellectually I know that I have time, that the training plan from Runner's World will get me ready for the half-marathon in SF, that it dovetails nicely with the Tri-TP for the Oly in Pacific Grove, and that it takes going through some ugly workouts in training to get to good race days. But still I worry. Gah.
The Bonus Brag:
We found the 2007 Blue Seventy Reaction wetsuits on sale for $161 (down from $275)!! This wetsuit got good write ups for an entry level suit (at full price!) and having tried it on, we know it fits well (enough) through the hips and boobs. You should have seen us in the tiny room with plastic baggies on our feet, wiggling and squiggling, trying to get these suckers on. Donna took one look at herself and flat out declared she would never wear hers in public. (I waggled my eyebrows at her and asked her if that meant she'd be wearing it in private around the house - which made her laugh and also hit me.) They are ridiculous. But hopefully less so in 60 degree water on the morning of the race! Did I mention we saved $114 each?

Dang I can identify with everything you wrote here! I agree 100% about a flat. I believe in that kind of karma (flats in training = no flats on race day). Been there done that myself and now you know that you can (and will) change a tire no matter what may happen on race day.
As for the run I have had many like that complete with the negative voices and you did the right thing by slogging through and completing it. It is difficult to run after a challenging bike, it just is. But it can be done. That's why we do this to challenge ourselved and get stronger right? :-)
Congrats on the wetsuit! Looks like a great one and it is so fun to find something like that for hugely less than the "sticker" price!
Will write more later . . . .
AWESOME BIKE RIDE AND RUN! You are so hardcore and you are going to ROCK Pac Grove!
Some runs suck. Sometimes several runs in a row suck, but you are getting stronger even if it doesn't feel like it. Hang in there, that awesome feeling run is coming.
I hear you on the wetsuit. I had my first open water swim since the Pac Grove Debacle of 2007 and had to don the neoprene straight-jacket yesterday. Ick. That is all I have to say about that. Ick.
I am in L-O-V-E with your doggies! Super cute! Thank you for posting their adorable mugs! It made my day yesterday. Give 'em a smooch for me!
Awesome job rockstar! (See this is what happens when i don;t have time to read and comment. I write this HUGE comment and everyone thinks I am a dork. Well, maybe that has nothing to do with the length of the comment...
Ouch on your sunburn. Hope it heals quickly.
RBR is right - some runs just stink. But they are still making us stronger. Hang in there!
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Ouchies on your sunburn. Yikes. That can't feel good. I'm guessing you'll remember the sunscreen next time. ;)
OK I'm a little behind in my commenting so here it comes all at once!
Go with the Brooks GTS 8's they ROCK!
OMG I love Tallulah Rockstar she is adorable!
Having a flat before a long downhill would put the fear of God in me. When I used to ride I always worried about doing 20 some miles/hour downhill and having a tire blow.
You are really doing great with your training. I am so impressed. As RBR would say "You are a Rockstar of the most Rockiest Stary kind!" You have come so far.
Sunburns suck. I too suffer from the light skin heritage and it seems I go from white to red and back again. Hope you get over it quick. I am sure it is what caused your bad run. The sun can really drain you when it gets you like it did. Don't sweat that run, you'll get another one in soon and it will be great.
OUCH.
I'm Scots Irish too...instant beetroot when exposed to even a flicker of sun. And then I seem to have permanent freckles after it dies down. Which would be cute, if it didnt remind me that that is how skin cancer starts. Stock up on that factor 50 my lovely!
OMG...the Charlie video is hilarious...thanks for the laugh!
Oh, man, that's some sunburn.
I look like a big round ball in my wetsuit. Someone told me though at my last tri that no one is capable of looking good in a wetsuit. She then pointed to a very skinny girl and said...see, even her butt looks big.
Kudos for finding that bargain price!
I'm doing multi-commenting too: How's the sunburn? I hope you had a good Mother's Day! Your dogs are sooo cute. I have Brooks runnings shoes, LOVE THEM. Had Asics and had tons of problems. Every foot is different. Flat tires suck - I had one during my triathlon in 2006 :(
I was looking at doing a tri this summer, but I don't know.....
Wow, that is a hell of a blowout you had. Glad you were able to stop safely to fix it. Sorry to see that sunburn -- OUCH!
As for the run, there are a lot of variables that can make it really sucky in a tri, even though it may be your strongest sport, as I've found out. Disregarding stepping on glass while barefoot, going too hard on the bike, insufficient nutrition and lack of brick workouts are probably the biggest ones I've been told. But, I think it's good to go through tough times during training as they can certainly pop up during a race as well. Then since you've been through them before, you'll know you can get through them again.
Keep up the awesome training, Calyx!!!
PS - Cute dogs!
Ouch that sunburn must really hurt. Great find on the wetsuit. Keep up your training and you will continue to improve even when you have an occasional bad run. We all have those from time to time
Ouch. It always takes me a few spring Saturday's to learn the sunscrean lesson...each year without fail.
